Assignment #1: 50, Tuesday, February 7
Two story outlines — 25 points
each
Your outline should include all of the following information:

Your story idea, clearly described
including the angle/focus you will take for the story

Possible documents to review to
gather background information - provide complete bibliographic references

Three possible sources to be
interviewed, including contact information and title.

What you currently know about the
subject.

What you think you’ll find out
about the subject
-
Why our audience would be
interested in this subject, what is the hook?
Each outline must be one
full, typed, single-spaced page.
Each student MUST get their
story ideas approved by Crystal Polasek or Brian Cain. You may meet with Crystal
or Brian during their office hours, make an appointment with them, or
contact them via e-mail. Stories that are not approved by the editors will
receive 0 points for the assignment.
Assignment #2: 50 points,
March 8
First story draft, Story #1
- Minimum of two pages,
double-spaced (~500-1000 words)
- At least two sources
(interviews and documents)
- No more than three spelling
errors, three AP style errors, three grammatical errors.
- Photography/artwork plan to
accompany story.
Assignment #3: 50 points,
March 1
First story draft, Story #2
- Minimum of two pages,
double-spaced (~500-1000 words)
- At least two sources
(interviews and documents)
- no more than three spelling

accompany story.
Assignment #4: 100 points,
March 29
Advertising Contract & Design
- Submit complete advertising contracts to Jessica DuBois
- Submit an electronic advertising design that meets the specifications
detailed in the contract and has been approved by the advertiser.
- Advertisements must be designed in PhotoShop, Illustrator, or InDesign as
appropriate.
Assignment #5: 100 points,
April 5
Photograph to accompany story
- Photo illustrations - Each student must shoot original photographs to
support their writing project for both print and Web mediums. Students may
select between traditional or digital photography. Non-original work will only
receive 1/2 credit for the assignment.
Assignment #6: 100 points,
April 5
Final Story, story #1
- Maximum of four pages, double spaced (~1000-1500 words).
- Story is accurate, fair, balanced.
- At least three quoted sources, all names and titles are correct
- Spelling, AP style, grammar are correct.
- Lead is polished and attention-grabbing.
- Story is organized well.
- Photographs/artwork attached
Assignment #7 100 points,
April 12
Final Story, story #2
- Maximum of four pages, double spaced (~1000-1500 words).
- Story is accurate, fair, balanced.
- At least three quoted sources, all names and titles are correct
- Spelling, AP style, grammar are correct.
- Lead is polished and attention-grabbing.
- Story is organized well.
- Photographs/artwork attached
Assignment #8: 100 points,
April 7
Non-Photo graphic or illustraton to accompany story
- Non-photo illustrations - Each student must develop an original non-photo
illustration to support their writing project. Non-photo illustrations may
include original, creatively design headlines or pull quotes. These
illustrations may be developed in Illustrator, Photoshop or InDesign.
Assignment #9: 100 points,
April 19
Layout First Draft
- Develop a two-page layout for the magazine.
- Layout should include a headline, byline and captions for all photographs.
- 10-point type, single-spaced, .25 first line indentions, include a drop
cap
- Must be developed in Adobe InDesign
Assignment #10: 200 points,
May 6
Final Layout
- Revise your draft layout and incorporate all instructor edits and
suggestions
- If your layout is to be used in the magazine, contact the design editor
for additional suggestions
- DO NOT include master page items on your submissions
- Submit print and electronic copy
- Must be developed in Adobe InDesign
- Layout must be packaged, including all links and fonts, on a CD
