Guidelines for Gender-Free Writing

  1. Avoid focusing on physical appearance.
  2. Avoid using special female/gender specific word forms.
  3. Try to avoid using gender modifiers altogether. When you must modify, use woman or female (not girls or ladies).
  4. Reword to eliminate unnecessary gender pronouns.
  5. Refer to a woman in the same way as a man. Both should be called by their full name, by first or last name, or by title.
  6. Avoid unnecessary reference to or emphasis on a woman's marital status.
  7. Males should not always be first in order of mention.
  8. Replace the masculine pronoun with one, you, he or she, or hers or his, where appropriate.
  9. Alternate male and female expressions and examples.
