Types of Graphs and Charts

Line 1. Shows comparisons

4. Clarifies and communicates relationships through time
5. Use for only one comparison per visual

Bar (3D Column)
1. Called histograms
2. Numerical dimensions are shown in bars of varying length
3. Shows comparisons
4. Multiple comparisons are possible
Pie Chart
Pie Chart (Exploded)
1. Division of the whole or parts of the whole
2. Easy to grasp
3. Layout with largest portions first, then clock-wise position decreases
4. Label larger portions inside circle, smaller portions outside with connecting lines
5. Don't make the proportions too small; group smallest portions if possible
Cosmograph 1. Parts to the whole
2. Similar to a pie chart
3. Less numerical, more graphical
Flow Chart 1. Steps in the process
2. Graphically shows the sequence of events or processes
3. Shows the relationship of steps in the process, but not of different things
Organizational Chart 1. Organizational relationships
2. Chain of command
3. Direct and indirect relationships
